    Kalimotxo

A recipe for Kalimotxo, red wine and coke. Ingredients for kalimotxo with a glass pitcher, empty glasses, and bottle openers.

So, coke and red wine probably sounds horrible to you. It’s not. Hear me out. Kalimotxo is a really simple and really refreshing drink. My dear friend Karin turned me on to them. In Boise, which is where I am from, there is this amazing Basque restaurant Bar Gernika. They serve Kalimotxos there, and I always try to get one, and their croquetas, which are amazing. I was skeptical at first because like you, I thought coke and red wine would be disgusting. I could blab on about how coke balances out nicely with cheap wine, but I won’t. Just make it, and you will be happy. It’s easy, yummy, and I like the caffeine, helpful when you’re super lazy and drinking. Give it a chance!

I’ve always known this as a “Spanish Harlem”. Funny that it actually seems to have some Basque heritage. Very refreshing!

travelled spain and lived with a family one summer in high school and lived there again in college (where my dorm had a bar in the lobby) and no matter where we were, kalimotxo was very very popular… it sounds terrible and just plain wrong, i know. but it is really good! “tinto” (short for “tinto de verano” — red wine + sprite) was also very popular. you’ve made me miss spain and now i will be sure to serve these at upcoming summer parties; thanks!

Love Kalimotxos!!! May not be authentic to do so, but it is delicious with a spritz of fresh orange juice and a slice of orange in the drink. Yum!

Ok, so I tried this skeptically, hours after I read about it. And I am a believer! Love this, thanks!

I used to drink this when I lived in Rome and had completely forgotten about the drink (which seriously was so fun and tasty!) Can’t wait to bring it back!

Uau, uau, uau…. Brilliant…. only someone from out of Basque Country could sell our kalimotxo as something so exotic as you have done. I love it!!! I drank litres and litres when I was a teenager (because it’s a teen’s drink)….. tht’s the reason why we’re having so many difficulties to come out of the crisis, anyone can sell our product better than us….

AMAZING! The fact that Kalimotxo made it to a food and drink blog just makes my day. I come from Algorta, a small town in the Basque Country where supossedly kalimotxo was invented in some festivities here…

This is our local summer drink… cheers to that!

XD you´ve made me very happy with this post. He ein the Basque Country, kalimotxo is almost the official drink, mostly on friendly gatherings and popular feasts…

Thank you for giving it a try, and spreading the recipe among the blogosphere. It is better to use cheap wine, and a final touch of strawberry or blackberry liquor.

Greetings from Bilbao to the basque community of Boise!!!

I can’t belive – bambus(croatian)!! this drink bears a guilt of lot of my horor hangovers till age of 18. never again :) I didn’t know that it’s so common all around Meditteranean, i thought it was result of Croatian resourcefulness, wich really comes out when it comes to drinking! :))))

OMG!!! This brings back so many good memories! This is THE drink on the streets during the San Fermin festivities, running of the bulls, in Pamplona! I went after university with friends and suffice to say we had an awesome time :)

It’s the standard Spanish frowned-upon drink for pennyless young’ns. It’s something you do and then you deny having done it forever. And, by the way, Tinto de Verano is wine and lemonade (tinto con limon) or wine and sweet soda (tinto con blanca) and THAT is refreshing and cool and so very Spanish summer.

You’re right, this does sound odd, but those are usually the types of things that end up being most delicious! I can definitely get down with a drink that’s this easy to prepare, AND calls for cheap wine! :)

I remember drinking (a fair amount) of it in Summer in Spain. I usually don’t like Coke (I know, boooo on me) but with wine, it tastes much better. So thanks ladies for reminding me of it and of past summers as a teenager!

My mister is Basque and he turned me on to these. They ARE good! It sounds strange at first, but it’s a great way to use red wine that you don’t want to go bad. I love your cute gif of it too!

I…am all over this. Whyyyyy did I not have it for my beach vacation?! I’m pretty sure I can only drink 1 b/c of the sugar in Coke, but I’d make it a good one.
