These Chocolate Covered Potato Chips are so easy, and so simple to make. They are always a crowd pleaser! I think the only way this could possibly get any better would be to sprinkle a generous amount of crumbled bacon over the chocolate before it hardens. You can also decorate these with fun sprinkles or jimmies.
How to make Chocolate Covered Potato Chips
Chocolate covered Potato Chips are incredibly easy to make! Make sure you read below for our tips and tricks.
1. Melt chocolate. Either using a double boiler, or incrementally in the microwave.
Tips and Tricks
Chocolate covered potato chips are THE BEST. A lot of people run into a lot of the same issues. The most common complaint is that the potato chips get soggy. Be sure to read through our tips and tricks for maximum success.
-
- To serve these immediately, you can pop them into the refrigerator to set for 10-15 minutes. Make sure not to leave them in refrigerator accidentally or they could get soggy.
- When you melt the chocolate, you want to get the chocolate to a perfect melting point where the chocolate is silky and smooth, and not thick. This will ensure that when you dip the potato chips, they have a nice layer of chocolate, but not a super thick layer of chocolate. Thick layers of chocolate make the potato chips soggy!
- The thicker the chips the better. You can thick sturdy ridged potato chips. Our favorite brand for this are Kettle Brand Crinkle Cut Potato Chips with Sea Salt.
- One of our favorite tricks when we need to melt chocolate is to actually get melting chocolate. It melts perfectly because that is what it is designed to do! We love these Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate Melting Wafers, and they also make white chocolate and milk chocolate too!
- If you don’t want to use a doubler boiler to melt your chocolate, you can use a microwave. We only recommend doing this if you are using melting chocolate. It’s also incredibly difficult to control the temperature of the chocolate in the microwave, so be sure to microwave the chocolate in small intervals, and keep stirring until smooth. Make sure not to overheat the chocolate or it will seize.
How to store Chocolate Covered Potato Chips
These are best eaten fresh! But if you must store them, store them layered between sheets of wax paper in an airtight container in a cool dry place. The longer you store the potato chips, the more likely they are to get a bit stale.

I have had Royce’s Chocolate Potato Chips and they are absolutely wonderful. Too bad one cannot buy Royce outside of Asia. They’re usually sold out of these babies by the end of the day.
Madonna
I tried these in P.E.I. and the were delicious only the whole chip was dipped in chocolate.

Oh man. I can feel my pants getting tighter as I type. Haven’t tried Jimmy Fallon’s ice cream yet—I’m currently obsessed with Blue Bunny’s Peanut Butter Panic *youmusttry* but his war with Colbert is compelling me. Love Adrianna’s suggestion as a hostess gift.

Peanut Butter Panic?! I feel like my boyfriend will love me more if I have a pint of that waiting for him when he gets home..

You MUST try “Talenti’s Gelato” …any flavor but the sea salt caramel is my fav. It is the most wonderful ice cream you will ever find unless you happen to go to Portland, OR and go to the “Salt and Straw” ice cream shops!!!
Maria
A Japanese chocolate company called Royce makes awesome choc potato chips too, you can get them across Asia.

Love this! I’ve bought chocolate covered potato chips before and have found the chocolate to be overpowering and too think where I can’t taste the salty potato chip. I’ve been thinking about this but it’s just been a thought. The photos make me want to go ahead and make these as soon as possible! Thanks!

Ahhh! you tempt me with the most amazing junk food. I actually had chocolate covered chips for the first time not too long ago. Now an addict. Anything salty with chocolate has my heart. I am a closet pretzel and chocolate eater. I eat them in solitude and would never admit it ;) I think I have a problem haha
Katrina @ Warm Vanilla Sugar
Mmm how simple is this?! Love it.

Jenny Park

The Sweet Cupcaker
I’ve had this treat before. It’s fabulous because it’s like peanut butter and chocolate. The perfect combo of sweet and salty. I want these so badly so I can eat them while I watch dancing with the stars and pass out candies to the little ones! Or over some ice cream!
maggie
I recently discovered Trader Joes has a milk chocolate ones. Too good. Not something I “needed” to discover, but I “need” to just make my own :)
Anyone who is skeptical should realize this is tame compared to Bacon & Chocolate- and no one ever questions chocolate covered pretzels, the reigning Sweet & Salty Champion.
And one last thing, if you like these you definitely HAVE TO try the Ben & Jerry’s: “Late Night Snack” Jimmy Falon’s flavor. Vanilla Bean Ice cream with caramel ribbons and little chunks of Chocolate covered potato chips!
Teri Lyn Fisher
That sounds amazing. I will for sure! Thanks for the tip!
maggie
Thank YOU for the awesome photos and not too serious food posts! ;)
Jenny Park
I love late night snack….almost as much as chubby hubby…still haven’t tried “schweaty balls” yet, but I think I’d be really into it :)
maggie
yeah, chocolate covered rum and malted milk balls–sign me up! :)
Vanessa
Awesome – actually reminds me of trips to my Nanas – she used to give us chips and choc at the same time and the salty/sweet taste always intrigued me.
Beautiful pics too
