If you frequent social media (and the internets in general), you’ve probably seen the new viral food trend on tik tok and instagram, a Butter Board . The original recipe was created by Chef Josh Mcfadden and recently popularized by Justine Doiron of Justine Snacks blog. If you’re not familiar, it’s what it sounds like, a board of butter to share with loved ones.
Many are calling it the next charcuterie board, but I actually don’t think anything could ever replace a delicious charcuterie board. Instead I like to just think of it as another way to serve bread and (deconstructed compound) butter. Some people are alarmed at the amount of butter used, but it’s definitely meant to be a communal snack! It’s definitely a party snack – a delicious, super simple party snack!
What is a Butter Board?
A butter board is literally some softened butter spread onto a large board or platter and topped with whatever flavor combination you prefer. Serve it with crusty bread (as you would enjoy a side of bread and butter). We’ve also added some fresh radishes for serving, because butter and radishes is a remarkable pairing that everyone should try at least once!
How to Make a Butter Board
Process
- Place a skillet over medium heat and add oil. Once oil is hot add sliced garlic and fry for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Stir and flip garlic slices to fry on other side for an additional 30 seconds. Remove from heat and drain onto paper towels.
- Spread cold softened butter onto a wooden board.
- Top with crushed nuts and fried garlic.
- Then top with the fresh herbs.
- Next top butter with citrus zest and pepper flakes (if using).
- Finally, finish board with a generous drizzle of honey and a sprinkle of sea salt flakes.
- Serve with toasted bread and radishes.
