What is Kewpie? Why Does it Make the Best Homemade Ranch Dressing?

Kewpie is a Japanese style mayonnaise. The main differences between western style mayonnaises and Kewpie is that Kewpie uses egg yolks (not whole eggs), making the mayonnaise richer. It's balanced out with more acid giving it a sweeter and overall more custard-like flavor.
We think using Kewpie for our homemade ranch dressing recipe really takes it over the top. The flavor is creamy and rich, but also bright herbaceous.
Kewpie can me found at most asian markets as well as most regular grocery stores, in the asian food aisle. If you're unable to find Kewpie, western-style mayonnaise will work just fine. Our preference is Best Foods/Hellmans for it's more neutral and smooth flavor.

Variations for Our Homemade Ranch Dressing Recipe

  • Replace the sour cream for Greek yogurt for a slightly healthier version.
  • Adjust the amounts of each herb depending on your flavor preference.
  • If you're unable to find Kewpie we recommend adding a small splash of Worcestershire sauce to the dressing so you still get a slightly umami flavor you would be missing by not using Kewpie.
