A recipe for an Australian Lamb and Sausage Roll A recipe for an Australian Lamb and Sausage Roll A recipe for an Australian Lamb and Sausage Roll Hey Guys! Did you know tomorrow’s Australia Day? Well neither did we until recently, but now that we know, we’re stoked. We love Australian food…especially snacks! We love how hearty the food can be, like their meat pies! Who doesn’t love a good meat pie? Did you guys know they also have a special little something called a sausage roll?! It’s basically a flavorful meat mixture stuffed inside a rich, buttery, flaky crust…does it get much better? We don’t think so. This Australian Lamb & Sausage Roll is usually made with pork sausage or ground beef or both, but we changed ours up by mixing up some ground lamb as well as some mild Italian pork sausage….nothing too fancy or fussy.

Australian Lamb and Sausage Roll

Serves 8 to 10
Ingredients:
filling:
1/3 cup plain bread crumbs
3 tablespoons milk
3/4 lb ground lamb
1/2 lb. mild Italian pork sausage (or any pork sausage of your choice)
1/2 yellow onion, diced
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 1/2 tablespoons tarragon, minced
1 tablespoon chives, thinly sliced
1 egg, lightly beaten
salt and pepper to taste

1 sheet puff pastry, rolled and cut into 2 4”x10” rectangles
1 egg, lightly beaten

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
2. Place breadcrumbs and milk in a large mixing bowl and stir together. Allow mixture to sit for 5 minutes.
3. Add remaining filling ingredients and mix together until fully combined. Season with salt and pepper. (cook off a small piece of the meat mixture to make sure it’s flavored and seasoned to your liking)
4. Divide the filling mixture in half and place atop one side of each sheet of puff pastry. Fold the shorter sides inward and roll until a 1/2 inch tab remains. Lightly egg wash the edge and finish rolling. Place the finished rolls onto a parchment lined baking sheet and lightly brush the rolls with egg wash.
5. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown and the filling has cooked through. Cut into pieces and serve.

You guys DON’T have sausage rolls? Really? I thought everyone had them ;) I have a pack of butter puff pastry waiting to be wrapped around something delicious. What a yummy looking recipe. Thanks for sharing it, looks absolutely delicious and the perfect hand warmer for the freezing temperatures (that’s the best thing about sausage rolls – having them in the go in winter!) :)

I picture this in mini form with a mint-y yogurt sauce as a fun finger food. Can’t wait to try it!

Please Please don’t destroy sausage rolls with yogurt. If you must use a condiment, tomato sauce is the only acceptable way to go.

I spent the most divine Australia Day eating sausage rolls, sitting on the beach and breaking the world record for most amount of people sitting on giant blow up thongs (flip flops) in the the atlantic ocean, off the coast of Perth (western Australia).

If you ever come to Australia, do it legit and go there. Sit on the beach, watch the waves and listen to our only national radio station (Triple J) do a count down of the most voted for songs all year. I think if you miss out on one of things, you’re not doing it right.
    A delicious recipe.
